Ant Mackenzie Wines Ltd was created in 2013 on a small property in Havelock North. The property is named Craft Farm and it is from here that Ant & Fiona run there business, which is 100% owned by them.

Ant’s interest in wine was sparked while at university.  After a couple of years, a science degree and with no real career in mind the wine industry appealed as an industry that looked exciting.  From Hawke’s Bay and with an interest in agriculture, business and marketing the wine industry offered many prospects.  An industry where on any day you might find yourself in overalls on a tractor, or hosting a dinner in New York-the contrasts couldn’t be greater.  Through the early 1990’s he occupied himself with getting qualified and some overseas experience.  Moving to Marlborough in 1996 to work at the new Drylands Estate Winery, it was only then that he knew he had made the right career choice.

Today he is busy with running a consultancy and a branded wine business.  He get’s great satisfaction in understanding what people enjoy drinking and working out how to provide them with that experience.  Along the way he helps clients with different parts of that journey, and make a focused range of wines under his own brands.

These brands are Tono, Craft Farm & Theory & Practice wines. If you’ve been in to see us, you would have seen the Theory & Practise range on our beverage menu. Theory & Practise wines showcase the best qualities of the Hawkes bay wine region, in a traditional style.

Here’s a little rundown from Ant on the background of Theory & Practise;

‘My working life in wine takes me up and down the country visiting wine regions, growers and producers.  I’m almost always helping producers make or market wine using some of the theories and practices honed over my years in the industry.

Along the way I come across special parcels of fruit and wine that often don’t have a home.

Working with these growers and sometimes wineries we put together blends that reflect the regions where they are grown and the contemporary wine styles that the market enjoys.

With an initial focus on our home region of Hawke’s Bay we produce a small range of four wines: Chardonnay and a Pinot Gris; a Merlot and a Syrah.

My grower clients that provide fruit for these wines include Andrew and Deborah Stewart and his parents Warren and Olwynne, John and Kathryn Loughlin, Neal Cave and Suzanna Taylor, Bruce Leppard, Johnny and Shona Lyons, Philip and Sarah Barber, and Rene Fisch. There are also winery clients contributing to these wines and sometimes an ‘x-factor’ component gets sourced from outside of the family to make that all important difference.’

If you haven't tried one of these delicious wines, make sure you check them out next time you are in.
